Article: Engraving initials or design on a leather wallet

Engraving initials or design on a leather wallet

You've found the leather product you've been looking for, and now it's time to make it a little more personal. The most popular personalization technique on leather goods is monogramming. With this method, the product acquires a uniqueness since it is actually manufactured with a single person as recipient. This makes it the perfect gift for women as well as men. In the case of our own store, engraving orders make up over 30% of the leather products we manufacture. If you want to know how we personalize our leather products, keep reading. If you still want to find ideas for the leather product you will engrave, see her collection us and non dimensions to communications for any information.

Intaglio engraving

This is the oldest method of printing letters on leather products. The logic is that by applying pressure on the leather surface, the surface of the stamp with which we apply the pressure will be imprinted. On a leather product the stamp will remain on the surface of the product for years. On very hard and rigid surfaces, craftsmen usually spray the area to be stamped with a little water, so that it softens and the stamp can be imprinted more easily. In the image below you can see an example of intaglio printing.

Hot press engraving

In the same logic as intaglio engraving, hot press engraving is also moving. In this case, in addition to pressure, the special press is heated, therefore leaving a slight burning sensation on the skin. While one could say that the result is almost the same as gravure engraving, hot press engraving is quite popular for its ability to capture engravings with color. For example on a black wallet we could engrave a name in gold letters. This is done by using thin special tapes which when in contact with the skin and the hot metal, are imprinted and stuck to the leather surface.

Laser engraving

While gravure and hot press engraving are quite popular and impressive in leather goods, in recent years another method has started to gain market share. Laser engraving has become so popular because it has the advantage of giving us complete freedom of designs on products. The customer can decide what font and size to engrave or even what design to engrave. During the laser engraving process we have the possibility to create the design we want on a computer and after we are satisfied with the result, to print this design on the skin. It is worth mentioning that during this method the skin is "burned" and leaves the desired print. In most cases, in the first days after the production of leather products with laser engraving, there is a "burnt" smell, which subsides after a few days. Laser engraving is always imprinted in black (due to burning) so it is not recommended to be applied to black leathers as the contrast is difficult to see.

In the Greek market but even more so abroad, you will find even more ways of engraving the leather such as for example the pyrography engraving, the carving method and the embroidery engraving. In our store we have the 3 popular methods mentioned above and we think they cover the needs of the majority.

If you are looking for handmade leather products that are guaranteed to last over time, you can take a look at collection us. All products can be engraved either with the gravure method or with a hot press, or with the laser engraving method. Get in touch with us for more details.
